The art project Reversing the Bombardment begins by reproducing a 7mm mountain cannon once used in Japan’s “colonial indigenous governance” campaigns. It then invites young descendants of the Atayal Topa group to return to the mountainous terrain where, in 1906, Japanese police forces bombarded their ancestral village. In a symbolic and performative gesture, participants fire the replica cannon toward a modern hotel—now standing on the very site of the former village. Infused with playfulness and irony, the project aims to invert the colonial act of aggression.
